Through its characteristic combination of poison (alcohol) and treatment (tomato juice), the Bloody Mary has earned a distinct position as a ‘lunchtime drink’ over the years.

The Bloody Mary is now important to brunch culture around the world, 100 years after its inception in Paris, and it’s this association with the social component of meeting with friends the morning after for food and a drink that we find so enticing.

Why are they called Bloody Marys?

According to legend, the Bloody Mary was named after a server named Mary who worked at a Chicago saloon called The Bucket Of Blood. Others suggest it was named after England’s Queen Mary Tudor. Nobody knows for sure, but once Prohibition ended, the drink gained popularity in America, and the name stuck. And the rest is history.
